Where they work best

Period properties, barn conversions and homes in conservation areas. A timber bifold doors installation typically takes 1–3 days from delivery to handover, with minimal disruption to the rest of the property.

The BifoldingDoor.net difference

Bifolding doors look simple from the outside — five panels, hinges, a track. The reality is more demanding. A well-installed bifold needs precise frame preparation, dead-level thresholds, weather-sealing that anticipates British rain, and an installation crew that has fitted enough of them to know exactly where things go wrong.

We've fitted these doors since 2015. Every timber bifold doors installation is surveyed by a specialist, manufactured in a UK factory to your exact opening, and installed by our directly-employed teams — never subcontracted.

FAQ

Timber Bifold Doors — common questions

The questions we hear most often during timber bifold doors site surveys. Anything not covered here, get in touch and we'll answer it properly.

Are timber bifold doors suitable for British weather?

Yes — provided the timber is engineered rather than solid softwood. Engineered hardwoods like accoya, meranti and oak are laminated for dimensional stability, meaning they won't warp, twist or swell with seasonal humidity changes as a solid timber would. With a factory-applied microporous paint or stain finish, properly engineered timber bifolds are entirely suitable for the UK climate and require minimal maintenance.

What hardwood is best for bifold doors?

Engineered accoya is generally the premium choice — chemically treated softwood with a 50-year above-ground durability guarantee, exceptional dimensional stability, and excellent paint-holding properties. Engineered oak gives a more traditional aesthetic and is well-suited to period properties. Meranti (a hardwood from Southeast Asia) is more cost-effective. Solid oak is also available but less recommended due to movement issues over time.

Do timber bifold doors require regular maintenance?

Factory-finished engineered timber bifolds typically require nothing more than a wipe down twice a year, with the paint or stain refreshed every 8–10 years (versus every 2–3 years for traditional softwood). Hardware should be lubricated annually. Compared to aluminium or uPVC (which are essentially maintenance-free), there's a small ongoing commitment — but the visual character is unmatched.

Can timber bifold doors be used in listed buildings?

Yes — timber is typically the only option permitted in Grade I and Grade II* listed buildings, and is often required by conservation officers in Grade II listed properties. We work with listed-building owners and conservation officers to specify a system that meets local authority requirements. Bespoke detailing — putty-line glazing, traditional sash-style mouldings, butt hinges — is available where needed.

How do timber bifolds compare with aluminium for insulation?

Timber is naturally a better thermal insulator than aluminium — wood has a thermal conductivity of around 0.13 W/m·K versus 237 W/m·K for aluminium. However, modern thermally-broken aluminium frames perform very well, and the difference in real-world U-value (when accounting for the glazing, which dominates) is small. Both can achieve U-values under 1.4 W/m²K with appropriate glass specification.

How long do timber bifold doors last?

Engineered timber bifolds with a factory-applied paint or stain finish have a typical service life of 40–60 years — the longest of any bifold material. Accoya-framed doors come with a 50-year above-ground service warranty from the timber manufacturer. Hardware will need replacement at 20–25 years, and the finish refreshed every 8–10 years.
